SECOND UGA BRASS QUINTET COMPETITION

   & Brass Festival Conference 2001


To be held at UGA Hodgeson & Ramsey Hall March 14th to 18th, 2001.
Day passes can be purchased to attend any event on the given day, incl. workshops, competitions, and concerts.

  1. Opening Night March 14th, 7:00 pm -The Welcoming Ceremonies

  2. featuring the Georgia Brass, Bulldog Brass Society, Odyssey Brass, and guest artists.
  3. March 15th, 2001, Thursday at 7 pm will feature the "St. Louis Brass Quintet". Members of this renowned American Quintet are Allan Dean, Ray Susaki, Tom Bacon, Mel Jernigan & Dan Parentoni
  4. March 16th, Friday at 7 pm the "Art of Brass, Vienna", a Brass Quintet from Vienna will perform.  ABV is a superb example of the fine Austrian brass tradition born at the Vienna Philharmonic
  5. March 17th, Saturday at 6:15 pm "Rhythm n' Brass" concert

  6. The "Rhythm n' Brass," which includes five brass with piano and added percussionist, will delight the Festival audience with their fine program. This young contemporary group is bringing brass into the 21st century.
  7. March 17th, Saturday at 8:30 pm the incomparable "German Brass", an ensemble made up of the 10 finest German brass players.  These musicians are members of the German Premier Opera, Symphony and Radio Symphony Orchestras.
  8. March 18th, Sunday at noon will feature the "True North Brass" from Canada. This fine BQ from Toronto is Canada's second Quintet to play at the Georgia event.  The great "Canadian Brass" from the Great White North headlined the last Festival in 1999.
  9. The "Grand Finale PJ" Sunday at 1:30 pm, will be an all star "Brass Blowout" featuring the Georgia Brass, Atlanta Symphony BQ, Atlanta Brassworks and many of our other jury members and Guest Artists, including Harvey Phillips.  This concert will be dedicated to the memory of the late Philip Jones (1928-2000).
The excitement of this 2001 Festival will feature the Premier debut appearances here in the USA of "German Brass" & "Art of Brass, Vienna".

The following artists are currently scheduled to appear:
German Brass, Fred Mills, Harvey Phillips, Art of Brass-Vienna, Saint Louis Brass, Rhythm n' Brass, Arthur Frankenpohl, Ronald Romm, True North Brass

For the 2001 COMPETITION the resident brass experts who will make up the jury during this 5 day event are our own UGA Brass Faculty and the St. Louis Brass Quintet and Harvey Phillips.
The St. Louis BQ will represent the most respected American Brass Chamber players of this generation.
This Second UGA Competition will again have four different categories for application. The four categories are:

  1. Open level
  2. College level
  3. High School level

  4. Three Prizes of Scholarships
  5. Recreational or Amateur level
ALL LEVELS EXCEPT THE OPEN CATEGORY MAY RECEIVE CRITIQUE IF THEY WISH TO SHOWCASE and enter as NON-COMPETITIVE.

The "2001 UGA Competition/Festival/Conference" will draw young brass players from all over the USA to Athens, GA to witness a high level competition and experience the best international performances possible. Attending this March
14-18th, 2001 Festival will have the first opportunity to hear the great "German Brass" & "Art of Brass, Vienna".

UGA Festival and Competition

Oct. 18th '98 Press Release from UGA Music Department Brass Faculty:

The Brass Faculty at the School of  Music at UGA is proud to announce the first bi-annual UGA Brass Quintet Competition to be held at UGA on March 9th-13th '99. This bi-annual celebration will alternate with the "Concours International de Quintettes de Cuivres" in Narbonne, France.
The Brass Faculty at UGA known as the Georgia Brass Quintet is  Edward Sandor & Fred Mills (trumpet faculty), Jean Martin
( horn), Phil Jameson (trombone) &  David Randolph (tuba). The '99 Brass Quintet Competition will take place during "UGA Brass Quintet Festival". This event takes place during spring break making the marvelous School of Music facilities available for the 5 day Olympian event.

The UGA BQ Competition  consists of four components:

A. The First bi-annual Inter-American Brass Quintet Competition with four categories:

  1. OPEN category for advanced BQs of any age from South, Central and North America including Canada. The winners from this OPEN competition will automatically be invited to go on to the famous Narbonne BQ Competition in the spring of the year 2000 in France.
  2. COLLEGE category for  BQs made up of registered College or University students.
  3. HIGH SCHOOL BQ category for registered HS students.
  4. RECREATIONAL category for any age, young and old from any club, band, orchestra, church, private or social group, etc. No age limit.
B. For participants of the UGABQ Conference there will be a choice to audit, compete or participate in the daily  BQ Workshops & Seminars being held with world renowned  BQ personalities,  such as members of Canadian Brass, Empire BQ, , New York BQ, Georgia BQ.
These workshops and seminars will include the following specialized topics.
  1. Rehearsal and practice improvement
  2. Repertoire- old and new
  3. Arrangements and transcriptions seminar with famous arrangers
  4. Career development
  5. Stage technique and self confidence development
  6. A special open seminar on new compositions for brass quintets with well known composers of brass music.
  7. There will also be exhibits of new brass instruments and brass music from well-known manufacturers and music suppliers
C. Every evening of this 5 day Conference will be celebrated with the "Festival of Brass Quintets".
Nightly at 7:30 PM,  BQs from Georgia and the International  Brass World will perform in UGA's splendid Hodgson Hall.  Well known participants in the "Festival" include David Ohanian, Robert Nagel, Fred Mills, Scott Hartman,  and Harvey Phillips . Special: Trumpet soloist Bernard Soustrot from Narbonne France will be our honored guests.

D.  The grand finale March 13th will feature the World famous CANADIAN BRASS who will be the honorary patrons of the UGABQ Competition.
